How To Stop A Panic Attack By Coping


Remember that when you escape or run away from a fearful situation, the anxiety grows in your mind and it will be much harder to enter that situation again. That means that your abilities to cope with anxiety will diminish or weaken. So, if you can, rather than leave, pause and wait. Often your anxiety will subside.

If you are planning to work on your panic, try thinking of a panic situation not as one single terrible event. Instead, try to view it as a situation that has three phases of work for you in order to cope with it:

l. Preparing for the symptoms before they occur;
2. Coping with the symptoms when they occur; and
3. Reinforcing yourself for coping, and staying with the situation.

During the preparation phase, remember that coping techniques such as slow, gentle breathing, relaxation, and rational techniques will help you look at yourself and your panic symptoms a little more realistically. in addition to preparing you for the actual situation. For many people the anticipation of a panic attack is much worse than the actual panic situation itself, and these techniques can really decrease your worry about the "what if.”

When you are in a fearful situation, you’ll be testing and practicing different skills, learning how effective they are for you. Measure your decreasing anxiety levels to discover which techniques are the most useful for you, and rely on them in the future. Be sure to write them down.

If you feel discomfort in the situation, whatever it is, you have a chance to deal with it. Face the internal sensations you fear. Experiencing anxiety will help you realize you can tolerate it - you won’t die - and you can continue with your life. You know you can tolerate a lot of anxiety, because you already have!

Even severe anxiety episodes can teach you that catastrophes don’t happen just because of the way you feel. There’s a very good chance that you've underestimated your abilities to withstand and cope with anxiety.
